   When the task succeeds, use Download SRT. Keep the original recording and check the words and timing together before publishing. Save a local copy promptly so your subtitle workflow does not depend on temporary result storage.

Convert WAV or M4A Audio to SRT

A recording contains sound; an SRT file describes which words to display and when. This audio to SRT converter uses AI to recognize speech in your recording and creates a separate subtitle file. It does not require a video track, which makes it useful when your source is an exported audio track, lesson or spoken recording.

Choose the file that matches the final recording you intend to use. Trimming an introduction, removing a pause or changing playback speed afterwards can shift the relationship between sound and subtitles. Generate SRT from that final audio version to give your review a consistent starting point.

What Is an SRT Subtitle File?

SRT is a plain-text subtitle format. Each cue has a sequence number, a start and end time, and the words to display. Blank lines separate the cues. For example, an illustrative cue could look like this:

You can import the downloaded file into software or a publishing service that accepts SRT. The file stays separate from your audio. It does not automatically attach itself to a recording, add visual styling or produce a captioned video.

How Audio-to-SRT Timestamps Work

The AI result provides timing information that is organized into subtitle cues. A cue’s start time indicates when its text should appear; its end time indicates when it should disappear. These times are relative to the uploaded recording, including any silence before speech begins.

If you need audio to SRT with timestamps, this is the output provided: cue-level timing alongside subtitle text. Review the transitions around pauses and sentence breaks. Recognition and timing can need correction, particularly with overlapping voices or unclear speech. The download does not guarantee frame-accurate alignment.

WAV and M4A have separate limits. WAV accepts standard PCM at 8–48 kHz, mono or stereo; M4A uses AAC-LC in the supported audio-only ISO-BMFF container. Both the file size and verified duration must fit the relevant profile. A filename extension cannot prove the encoding, so the service checks the uploaded bytes before quoting transcription.

Use this workflow for podcast excerpts, interviews, lectures, language-learning recordings or an audio track that needs a subtitle file. A timed companion can help you follow a lesson or prepare captions for an edit that uses the same audio.

Listen through the downloaded subtitles with the recording before sharing them. Pay attention to names, specialist vocabulary and quiet passages. If you later add the audio to a video with a different starting offset, check synchronization in your editing software. The tool supplies the subtitle file; your publishing workflow determines how it is displayed.

Supported Languages

The current launch set is English, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Arabic. Choose the language actually spoken in your file. The subtitle text follows the recognized speech; the language selector does not request translation. Clear speech with limited background noise gives you a better starting point for checking the result.

AI Credits and Processing

Both WAV and M4A use 1 AI Credit per rounded-up media minute, including silence. The quote comes from the inspected recording, not its filename or an estimated size. Confirm only after reviewing the required Credits and your available balance. That confirmation reserves Credits and submits the task for transcription.

Eligible new Free accounts receive 5 Welcome AI Credits automatically after registration and email verification. They expire seven days after issuance. Uploading or starting another task does not extend that expiry. Transcription Credits are reserved only after you confirm the quote.

Private Upload and Temporary Processing

Your audio is uploaded privately and sent to ElevenLabs for cloud AI transcription. Application input storage is limited to 4 hours, with earlier deletion when processing finishes. Results are available for 24 hours after completion, and downloads require ownership checks.

ElevenLabs governs its own provider retention; application cleanup is not a promise of zero provider retention. This uploader page excludes analytics, advertising, affiliate and support scripts. Keep your original recording. Closing the page during upload can interrupt it; after a task is accepted, returning in the same browser tab can restore its status.
