How to Convert Video to Text

   Choose Upload and review cost. The service privately uploads and checks the file, including its tracks and duration. Read the quoted Credits alongside your available balance. You can stop here without starting AI transcription; the quote is a separate step from confirmation.

3. Transcribe the spoken audio

   Confirm transcription when you are ready to use the quoted Credits. Cloud AI processes the speech and the tool prepares your text result. Follow the task status on this page. Processing time varies, so keep your original video and avoid starting another task to check progress.

4. Download the text transcript

   On success, review the preview and choose Download TXT. Save the file locally, open it in a text editor and compare important passages with the recording. The download contains the full generated text even when the on-page preview shows only its beginning.

Convert MP4 to Text

An MP4 combines moving pictures with an audio track. This converter turns the speech in that audio into a text file you can read, search and copy in your own applications. You upload the supported video directly; there is no need to extract a separate audio file first. The original video remains a separate file.

An MP4 filename does not identify its encoding. Two files ending in .mp4 can contain different video or audio codecs, which is why the service inspects the actual media before offering a transcription quote. Use H.264 / AVC video and AAC-LC audio. Renaming a different format to .mp4 will not make it compatible.

What Is Video Transcription?

Video transcription converts spoken content in an existing recording into written words. It gives you a text reference for material that would otherwise require listening again. Here, the input is a file you upload and the result is a downloadable transcript, rather than live microphone capture or dictation.

The audio is the source of the words. Text on slides, signs or screens will not be included simply because it appears in the picture. A presenter must speak that information for it to be recognized. Music, background noise and overlapping voices can make recognition less reliable, so check the result against the source before relying on it.

These are different output formats. Changing pages while a task is active keeps that task and its original output; it does not start a second conversion.

What You Get in the TXT Transcript

The download is plain UTF-8 text. It contains the recognized words and punctuation from the tool’s canonical transcription result, ordered as they occur in the recording. Line breaks separate its text cues; those lines are not automatically rewritten into polished paragraphs or organized as chapters. Unicode text is preserved for supported languages.

There are no generated timecodes, sequence numbers or speaker labels in the TXT file. It is a transcript to review, not a structured meeting record. Keep names, numbers and technical terms on your review list: AI may recognize a plausible word that differs from what was said. Make any corrections in your own editor after downloading.

The on-page preview helps you check that a result is ready, but it may be shorter than the full file. Use Download TXT to keep the complete generated transcript. There is no document formatting to preserve or specialist file format to import; an editor that reads UTF-8 plain text can open it.

When Should You Convert Video to Text?

For an interview, a transcript gives you material to search for a topic or quotation in your own editor. Listen to the relevant passage again before quoting it, and identify speakers yourself where needed. The text output does not label participants or resolve ambiguous overlapping speech for you.

For lectures, webinars and course recordings, use the text as a companion to the video. It can help you revisit spoken explanations while the recording remains the reference for diagrams, demonstrations and visual context. Check the length limit first: a full session may need preparation outside this tool before it can be uploaded.

For tutorials, presentations and recorded discussions, a TXT file is a practical starting point for your own review or writing. You decide what to extract or reorganize afterwards. The conversion itself does not create notes, choose action items, summarize an argument or rewrite the speaker’s grammar.

Both duration and size limits apply, independently of your Credit balance. A compressed file can be small but too long; a short, high-bitrate video can exceed the size limit. The video also needs a usable audio track. This page processes one uploaded file at a time and does not offer video trimming or transcoding.

These are the same options available in the tool’s language selector. Choose the language actually spoken in the video. Transcription keeps recognized speech in that language; it does not translate it. Clear, audible speech helps, but accents, specialist vocabulary and competing sound can still affect the result. Review important details in the original recording rather than assuming every line is correct.

AI Credits and Processing

The current rate is 1 AI Credit per media minute, rounded up. For example, 2 minutes uses 2 Credits and 2 minutes 1 second uses 3. Duration includes silent sections. The quote comes from inspection of your upload, not a filename or a length typed into the page. Text output uses the same transcription rate as other supported outputs.

Eligible new Free accounts receive 5 Welcome AI Credits automatically after registration and email verification. They expire seven days after issuance. Uploading or starting another task does not extend that expiry. Transcription Credits are reserved only after you confirm the quote.

If the quote is above your balance, follow the account guidance to Pricing. Pro and Max include monthly allowances, and active paid subscribers can purchase Extra AI Credits. The page uses your existing account rules; there is no separate Video to Text subscription or promise of unlimited use.

Private Upload and Temporary Processing

This is cloud processing: your video leaves your device through a private upload and is sent to ElevenLabs for AI transcription. Our input storage limit is 4 hours, with earlier deletion when processing finishes. Results are available for 24 hours after completion; downloading them requires an ownership check. Save the TXT file locally while it is available.

ElevenLabs governs its own provider retention; this page does not promise zero retention or immediate deletion by the provider. The media tool excludes site advertising, analytics, affiliate and support scripts. Upload only material you have permission to process, keep your original recording, and choose a suitable place to store the downloaded transcript.

Closing the page while uploading can interrupt the transfer. Once a task has been accepted, returning in the same browser tab can restore its status, including on the other video tool page. An active task keeps its original output type and account ownership. Checking its progress does not submit the file again.
