What Is an SRT Subtitle File?
A SubRip file is plain text arranged into numbered cues. Each cue has a start time, an end time and the words shown during that interval. A blank line separates one cue from the next. Here is a short illustrative cue, not a promise about the output of your recording:

Video to SRT vs Video to Text
Use SRT when the words need to appear at specific moments in a video. A plain transcript is better suited to reading or reference, because its primary output has no subtitle cue timing. This tool is focused on the timed SRT file; it does not create summaries, translate speech or style captions.

The file’s actual tracks and duration must pass inspection. Renaming an unsupported file to .mp4 does not change its encoding. Upload one video at a time and keep your original file available until processing is finished.
When Should You Generate SRT from Video?
Use this workflow for an interview, lesson, product walkthrough or recorded tutorial that needs a separate caption file. It is also useful when a video editor or publishing workflow asks for SRT alongside the video. Review the captions in context before handing them to another person or making them public.
AI can mishear technical vocabulary, names or overlapping speech. Inspect both the words and the cue timing, especially around pauses and speaker changes. The result is a starting point for a checked subtitle track, not a guarantee of transcription accuracy.

Private Upload and Temporary Storage
Your video leaves your device: it is uploaded privately and sent to ElevenLabs for cloud AI transcription. This is not local browser processing. Our input storage limit is 4 hours, with earlier deletion when processing finishes. Results are available for 24 hours after completion and downloads require ownership checks.
External provider retention is governed by ElevenLabs; we do not promise zero retention. This media page excludes advertising, analytics, affiliate and support scripts. Keep your original video and download your result promptly. Closing the page during upload can require a new upload; once a task is accepted, returning in the same browser tab can restore its status.

Can I convert MP4 to SRT?
Yes, when the MP4 contains H.264 / AVC video and AAC-LC audio. The tool transcribes speech from the video’s audio track and generates subtitle cues. It does not extract existing embedded subtitles or read text from video frames.
What video formats are supported?
The current input is MP4 with H.264 / AVC video and AAC-LC audio. An MP4 extension alone does not prove compatibility: the uploaded file is inspected before transcription. If its encoding is unsupported, export a compatible MP4 in your video software and choose that file.
What is the maximum video length and file size?
Each video must be 30 minutes or shorter and 500 MiB or smaller. Both limits apply. A small file can still be too long, and a short video can still be too large. The service checks the uploaded media, not just the filename.
How many AI Credits does Video to SRT use?
Usage is 1 AI Credit per media minute, rounded up. For example, a two-minute video uses 2 Credits and a two-minute-one-second video uses 3. Your actual quote comes from the inspected file and appears before you confirm. Silence is included in the media duration.
Which languages are supported?
English, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Arabic. Choose the language actually spoken in your video. Clear speech and limited background noise generally make the resulting captions easier to review; always check names, numbers and timing against your original recording.
Is Video to SRT free?

Can I convert a YouTube video URL directly?
No. This tool accepts a supported MP4 file from your device, not a YouTube URL or another online video link. Choose a file you have permission to upload and process.

SRT is a subtitle file with cue numbers and start/end timestamps, intended for captions synchronized with a video. Plain text is a readable transcript without subtitle timing as its primary output. This page produces SRT.
