What Can Be Lost When You Convert VTT to SRT?
WebVTT can describe more than dialogue and timing. SRT cannot express all of that extra structure, so this conversion is not perfectly lossless for every file. The converter reports format losses when your source contains information that its SRT output cannot represent. A plain VTT can have zero reported losses.
For supported cues, subtitle text, start and end times, internal text lines and cue order are preserved. Existing inline tags also stay in the text. The converter does not remove every tag or invent a loss just because it sees markup. A player may interpret that markup differently, so text preservation and identical appearance are separate questions.
- Cue layout changes. WebVTT settings for position, alignment, size, vertical layout or regions cannot be represented by this SRT output. Affected cues receive a layout notice.
- Style blocks removed. STYLE blocks define WebVTT styling outside the cue text. They are omitted and reported separately from inline tags that remain in the dialogue.
- Metadata details removed. REGION and NOTE blocks, extra header information, source cue identifiers and other unsupported settings are reported when present. SRT gets new sequential numbers instead of the source identifiers.
After conversion, the Format changes area groups the detected losses and lets you expand the details. Where a notice concerns a cue, it identifies that cue. The detail list is limited to the first 20 entries; the summary still reflects the total. Review those notes and retain your VTT if the discarded information matters to your workflow.
VTT vs SRT
Files ending in .vtt use the WebVTT subtitle format. SRT is a simpler format for exchanging numbered, timed cues. The choice depends on what your destination supports and whether it needs WebVTT-specific presentation features.

VTT to SRT Example
This plain cue has no extra settings or metadata. The WEBVTT header disappears, a sequence number is added, and milliseconds use commas. The cue still starts at one second and ends at three seconds. Richer files may also produce the format-change notices described above.

When Should You Use SRT Instead of VTT?
- An editor requests SRT. Convert an existing WebVTT track into the accepted subtitle structure before importing it.
- Your player accepts SRT. Supply the requested file format, then check the subtitles during playback in that player.
- You need to exchange simple timed text. Share cue text and timing in a numbered format when collaborators do not need WebVTT layout features.
- Your next step uses SRT. Prepare the file for text extraction or a later timing adjustment while retaining the original VTT as a reference.
FAQ
What is the difference between VTT and SRT?
Both store timed subtitle text. WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT header, uses dots before milliseconds and can include layout settings and metadata blocks. SRT uses sequential cue numbers and commas before milliseconds. Converting between them changes the structure; some WebVTT features have no direct SRT equivalent.
Is WebVTT the same as VTT?
Yes. The .vtt extension commonly identifies files in the WebVTT format. WebVTT to SRT and VTT to SRT describe the same conversion here. You can select your existing .vtt file without renaming it first.
Does converting VTT to SRT preserve subtitle timing?
Yes. Supported cue start and end values remain the same, including their milliseconds. Only the timestamp notation changes. Cue order is retained as well. If the subtitles are already early or late, converting the format will not correct that timing problem.
Will VTT positioning and styling be preserved in SRT?
Not all of it. WebVTT cue layout settings and STYLE or REGION blocks do not carry over through this conversion. The tool reports detected format losses when those features are present. Inline tags remain in the text, but that does not guarantee the same appearance in every player.

How do I convert SRT back to VTT?
